What is the Political Courage Test?

Colorado Congressional Election 2014 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Having the government and/or corporations getting involved in a woman's health care decisions is a violation of our constitutional right to privacy. Politicians on both sides of this issue have used it to keep America divided for as long as I've been alive. Its time for both sides to come together and find ways to reduce unwanted pregnancies. A good place to start is for America to start investing in education again.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
There is a finite amount of cash at any given time. Right now too much of that cash is locked up in Wall St. vaults and not enough is in the hands of the consumers. Even Standard & Poors recently said we must address the income inequality in America or things will get worse. Thirty years of tax cuts for the so-called job creators hasn't resulted in living wage jobs being created. Its resulted in America subsidizing the work force of multi-billion dollar corporations like wall mart. We need to fix this.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
The Citizens United and McCutcheon decisions have diluted my right to free speech both as a candidate and as an individual voter. The political party establishments and the media establishment judge a candidate's viability and worth by how much money they raise. Before I decided to run I wrote about the need for a Constitutional amendment to address this problem. I believe the answer is to restrict campaign contributions so that they only come from within the boundary lines of the district or the office being sought. Yes Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering taxes as a way of promoting growth in the economy?
Yes Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
These questions aren't simple yes/no questions. This is the first time in our nation's history that we've tried to come out of a serious recession without serious jobs-creating investment in infrastructure. It shows in the lack of living-wage jobs available. We've been cutting taxes for "jobs creators" for 30 years. Production is up, wages are down and profits are through the roof. We need to return to a tax policy that works for ALL Americans and not just the wealthy ones.
Yes Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
Education is a local control and states rights issue. No Child Left Behind was full of mandates and did great harm to our educational system and eroded local control. Common Core does not have any mandates but is being blamed by extremists for taking away the local control that we lost with NCLB. Our military, business and higher-ed leaders have been telling us for years that our HS graduates are not prepared to work in a global economy. Common Core was developed by them, along with public ed leaders, so we have minimum standards for graduation.
No Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
No Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production?
Keystone cannot be built without encroaching on the property rights of American citizens. I will not support taking away a citizen's property rights for the benefit of a corporate profit line. We are exporting more oil now than we are importing. This hasn't brought the price of gasoline down and our farmers are still struggling with these costs. We've been subsidizing the oil industry for over 100 years. If we truly desire energy independence then we need to start subsidizing renewable energy at the same levels or take away subsidies for all energy companies. Level the playing field.
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
I have a B.S. in Mathematics with a minor in Physics. I agree with 97% of the world's scientists who say climate change is real that that human activity is one of the causal factors. We put a man on the moon. We put artificial hearts into people to keep them alive. I believe we have the ability, if we come together, to address this problem with science.
No Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
This question is entirely too open-ended for a yes/no answer. I have refused surveys by both pro-gun and gun control groups. I am a gun owner and I support the second-Amendment. That is the prevailing sentiment in the district I want to represent. I will not sponsor or co-sponsor any gun legislation regardless of whether it is pro-gun or anti-gun. This issue is one of the several that politicians use to keep America from noticing the failure of Congress to address jobs, Social Security, Immigration, Veteran Care, etc.
Yes Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act?
I am running to represent one of the poorest districts in the nation. I can easily see the benefits that the ACA has brought to the people of my district. The ACA is not a government take-over of health care as the extremists want people to believe. It is simply a set of rules that the private health insurance industry must live by. People have to live by rules. The Supreme Court (incorrectly) says corporations are people. Let the corporations live by rules too.
No Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
This is another question that cannot be answered with a simple yes/no. Undocumented immigrants who have committed felonies should be deported. The 40% of undocumented immigrants who came here legally but had their Visa expire while waiting for a new Visa or citizenship and are working, paying taxes and abiding laws should not be deported. It is not their fault that our immigration system is antiquated and broken.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
The DoD estimates that over 200 LGBT service members gave their lives in Iraq in Afghanistan. Thousands more came home wounded. Our founding documents include the words "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". To say that these documents don't apply fully to people who have sacrificed their lives and/or health for our country is to dishonor their service and the service of non-LGBT veterans like me. I served for ALL Americans, not some Americans.
Yes Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
Yes Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
Military force should be a last resort and not the first resort that too many members of Congress wish it to be. I will not consider a vote to authorize war unless we get America fully invested in the success. Before we send combat troops anywhere we need to have a new draft so Wall St sons serve with Main St sons. We must pay for it instead of putting it on the national credit card and we must agree that the war isn't over until the warriors and their families are taken care of.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?
If this scheme to weaken Social Security had been allowed when Bush 43 tried it then we would have millions of retirees today who would not have a penny to spend because of the 2008 crash of the stock market. Over the last 30 years America has lost almost all defined-benefit pension plans. In 2008 too many 401K and other savings accounts were lost. Our economy hasn't recovered for too many people and too many people don't have the ability to have savings accounts. Social Security is the only tried-and-true retirement system left. We must protect it, make it stronger.

The extremists who want to either eliminate whole sections of government or placate their base will suggest elimination or drastic decreases and/or increases in various area. This is not a reasoned approach to governance. A reasoned approach consists of looking at all of the available data and arguments and making an informed decision. This Congress has repeatedly proven that they are uninformed and incapable of making reasoned decisions.
This is another question where the available answers don't allow for an intelligent answer. I will approach these questions as a Congressman by looking at the available data and making a reasoned, informed decision on whatever is being proposed. I generally believe that corporations and the uber-wealthy have received too many tax breaks and have not done anything to warrant keeping them. They're not creating living-wage jobs but they are hoarding America's wealth. This is an unsustainable situation that is preventing growth and harming our future.
1) Protect Social Security from cuts and make it stronger by adjusting the payroll tax cap for sustainability. 2) Repair our current infrastructure and build 21st Century infrastructure. 3) Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR). 4) Fight to make sure Congress pays attention to the needs of our veterans. The failure of this Congress to take care of our war vets is one of the most disgraceful things I've ever seen. Passing CIR, according to the Congressional Budget Office, will give us money to pay for investing in infrastructure and education.
